The Lewes Downs were cleared of woodland centuries ago to create
pasture for sheep. The chalky soil is very thin and improverished
of nutrients but gives rise to an incredible variety of plant species.
The short vegetation allows the ground to warm up in the sunshine
so many insects are able to survive here at the northern most edge
of their range.
It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and contains a National
Nature Reserve. The land is managed by English Nature and Sussex
Wildlife Trust to maintain its special wildlife and natural features
for present and future generations. |
